LatchBio is advancing humanity's ability to engineer biology by improving AI's application to biology across basic research, drug discovery, and biosecurity. The company's science team is growing past 100 people, and this Production Manager role owns how their work gets staffed and delivered.
In this role, you will:
- Match people to projects: Know the strengths, growth areas, and availability of every scientist on the team, and allocate them to projects where they'll do their best work, without being their direct manager.
- Plan projects: Gather customer requirements, ensure the team understands them, and work with sales and engineering to set realistic scope and timelines.
- Own production and revenue: Track output and costs across every project, partner with finance to forecast and deliver against targets, and work with engineering on tools that make delivery faster and cheaper.
- Shape scientific direction: Understand the science behind the work and help develop new projects that build on the team's strengths.
You'll report to the Chief Product Officer, Hannah Le. This is an on-site role in San Francisco. The company meets as a team Mondays and Fridays, plus ad hoc as needed. There is no tracking of when you come in or leave, and PTO is unlimited. The culture emphasizes radical transparency, output-driven evaluation, and minimal meetings.
Requirements:
- Science background in biology: You've done real scientific work at the bench or computationally. You understand the differences between various scientific specialties (e.g., single-cell analysis, statistical genetics, proteomics, genomics, cell therapy, structural biology) and why they matter for project staffing. An MS or PhD is a plus; hands-on experience counts equally.
- Experience running scientific delivery: A few years managing projects or production for a team of experts, such as at a CRO, core facility, or biotech, juggling many projects simultaneously with real deadlines and quality standards.
- Great intuition for matching scientists to work: You can quickly assess someone's expertise and place them where they'll be most effective.
- Steady under shifting priorities: You can re-plan quickly when customer scope changes or deadlines move, keeping everyone aligned.
