OpenAI's Hardware organization is building AI-native silicon and system-level solutions for advanced AI workloads. This role drives manufacturing strategy and execution for next-generation AI hardware, with focus on PCBA manufacturing, assembly, process development, and production readiness.
You will partner with design engineering, systems engineering, operations, TPMs, contract manufacturers, and suppliers to transition hardware products from concept through prototype, NPI (new product introduction), and high-volume production. Key responsibilities include owning manufacturing and quality initiatives across the full product lifecycle; leading PCBA manufacturing process development including assembly, validation, test, rework, and yield improvement; establishing NPI processes and quality controls across internal and external partners; providing hands-on engineering support during design, prototype, validation, and production phases; assessing manufacturability and identifying production risks early; driving root-cause analysis for manufacturing and quality issues; researching manufacturing automation and test methodologies; developing manufacturing requirements and schedules; conducting manufacturing readiness reviews; and managing multiple hardware programs simultaneously.
Ideal candidates have a strong track record taking complex hardware from concept through high-volume manufacturing. Deep PCBA manufacturing experience is essential, including assembly processes, manufacturing test, process development, yield optimization, and quality. You should be familiar with PCBA assembly and rework processes, component-level manufacturing, and equipment for complex high-performance hardware. Significant experience working with JDMs, contract manufacturers, and suppliers is required. You understand manufacturing challenges in high-density, high-power, high-speed compute systems and can partner effectively with electrical, mechanical, systems, test, reliability, operations, and supply chain teams. Experience driving NPI timelines and managing manufacturing readiness reviews is important. You excel at analyzing manufacturing and test data to identify issues and drive improvements. You are comfortable getting hands-on during prototype builds, failure analysis, and production ramps, and thrive in ambiguous, rapidly changing environments.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model of 3 days in-office per week. Relocation assistance is available.
