Epoch AI is a research institute investigating trends in machine learning and AI's economic consequences. We're seeking a Product Manager to own the website—Epoch's main product and the primary touchpoint for our audience of policymakers, journalists, researchers, and AI lab leaders. In this role, you'll be responsible for the entire website experience: deciding what gets built, setting priorities, defining standards, and ensuring quality at launch. You'll hold the context that individual researchers lack—understanding how publications and data products relate, how users should navigate the site, and what each page is for. You'll own cross-cutting elements like topic pages and navigation, and you'll decide how reports and data insights are presented. You'll work closely with three teams: the senior product designer and design team (who turn specs into visuals), web developers (who build them), and the comms team (who own writing, publications, social media, and SEO). You'll report directly to the COO. This is an individual contributor role with no direct reports. Key responsibilities include: setting goals and specs for new pages/features with researchers and designers; prioritizing across the site and saying no when requests don't fit; establishing design standards and defining shared site elements; running projects from goal to launch; reviewing designs and answering team questions; understanding the audience through analytics, feedback forms, and user interviews; and owning QA before every launch. You'll need strong product taste—the ability to anticipate what your audience will find clear versus cluttered before analytics confirm it. Clear writing is essential, as much of the job involves one-page briefs and decision notes that busy researchers will read. You must be comfortable with data, charts, and research—able to read scatter plots, spot meaningless numbers, and get up to speed on research areas quickly. You'll need people skills to deliver difficult messages (like "your feature isn't getting built this quarter") while maintaining strong working relationships. Organization and follow-up are critical. The role requires ability to travel to three annual team retreats. Nice-to-have qualifications include familiarity with Epoch's research or AI broadly, prior product management experience (in tech, on websites, or at research organizations/newsrooms), front-end knowledge for conversations with developers, and comfort with AI coding tools like Claude. The company emphasizes that if you don't tick all boxes but think you'd be a great fit, you should apply anyway. Epoch is committed to building an inclusive, equitable community and welcomes candidates regardless of age, gender identity, political identity, physical abilities, veteran status, neurodiversity, or other background. REQUIREMENTS: - Strong product taste and ability to anticipate user experience - Clear writing skills for briefs, decision notes, and communication - Comfort with data, charts, and research interpretation - Understanding of the target audience (policy people, journalists, researchers, AI lab staff) - Experience shipping web products with designers and developers - Strong people skills and ability to manage difficult conversations - Organizational skills and follow-up discipline - Ability to travel to three annual team retreats - At least 3 hours of work-hour overlap with Pacific Time (UTC-8) - Professional-level English proficiency - Nice-to-have: prior product management experience, familiarity with AI/Epoch's research, front-end knowledge, comfort with AI coding tools
