Alpaca is a US-headquartered global leader in agent-first brokerage infrastructure serving hundreds of financial institutions across 40 countries. The company provides institutional-grade APIs for stocks, ETFs, options, crypto, fixed income, and 24/5 trading, with over 10 million brokerage accounts managed through its platform. Backed by $400 million in funding from top-tier investors including Spark Capital, Tribe Capital, and Y Combinator, Alpaca operates a globally distributed team of 400+ members.
You will own Alpaca's market data strategy and business as both a capability powering the platform and as a standalone, revenue-generating product line. This role balances strategy and execution: you'll decide what data to source, how to package and price it, what to build versus buy, and then ship the APIs, feeds, and tooling that partners and internal teams depend on daily.
You'll inherit live, complex problems: multiple exchange onboardings with licensing and redistribution constraints, a pricing model needing rethinking as the company expands across asset classes and geographies, partner requests for new data capabilities (consolidated feeds, historical datasets, derived analytics), and internal teams consuming market data without dedicated product ownership.
Key responsibilities include negotiating or informing negotiations on exchange licensing and redistribution rights; assessing build-vs-buy decisions for data infrastructure; building the commercial model (pricing, packaging, revenue growth); owning competitive positioning against dedicated market data providers; leading the developer experience for market data APIs (REST, WebSocket/SSE, historical endpoints); and conducting partner discovery to understand what data capabilities are table-stakes versus differentiating for neobrokers, RIAs, hedge funds, and crypto exchanges.
The role offers the opportunity to define a new revenue stream, work directly with global exchanges and vendors, and leverage Alpaca's unique bundled brokerage-plus-data model as a competitive advantage.
