OpenAI's Legal Industry Team is seeking a Product Manager to lead the company's work with law firms, in-house legal departments, legal technology companies, and the broader legal ecosystem. This is a high-ownership, hands-on role focused on understanding how AI can support serious professional work in law.
You will turn customer, partner, market, and model evidence into a clear product strategy and roadmap for OpenAI's legal offerings. This includes defining what to build, what not to build, and where ecosystem partners should lead. You'll define requirements and shepherd products from early concept through real-world use and iteration, working closely with customers and partners to ensure solutions are useful, trustworthy, and complementary to existing legal products and expertise.
Key responsibilities include leading execution across Research, Engineering, Design, Safety, Security, Go-to-Market, and Partnerships teams. You'll resolve ambiguity, surface tradeoffs, inspect outputs, and close the detailed loops required to ship trustworthy products. Success depends on collaboration, follow-through, and judgment as much as strategy. You'll spend significant time with customers and partners, work closely with researchers and engineers, and keep complex work moving across teams in a fast-moving, sometimes chaotic environment.
Ideal candidates have personally built and shipped zero-to-one enterprise, developer, or AI products while staying close to users and product behavior. You combine strong product judgment with technical curiosity—able to reason from model and evaluation evidence, distinguish between model, data, workflow, trust, and delivery problems, and adapt when facts change. You earn credibility with demanding practitioners, collaborate with low ego across teams you don't manage, and bring clarity, pace, and calm to complex work. Legal or regulated-industry experience is helpful but not required; a J.D. is not necessary.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. OpenAI offers relocation assistance to new employees.
