Polar is building the finance layer for the next generation of AI products, rethinking billing for a world of usage-based software, programmable pricing, and AI agents. The company focuses on real-time metering, pricing as code, flexible customer identities, and giving developers greater control over monetization. As a Product Engineer, you will shape and build across Polar's entire stack, solving complex technical challenges while creating exceptional developer experiences. The role is end-to-end ownership: identifying opportunities, shipping features, and iterating on both technical implementation and product outcomes. You'll translate complex billing and monetization workflows into intuitive interfaces, powerful APIs, and thoughtful abstractions. The team operates as a small, remote-first group with a strong bias toward shipping. You'll work independently, collaborate when it matters, and maintain high quality standards without sacrificing speed. You'll stay close to merchants, understanding how they use Polar, uncovering pain points, and translating feedback into meaningful improvements. Polar's stack includes TypeScript (React, Effect) on the frontend, Python (FastAPI, Dramatiq) on the backend, and Postgres, Clickhouse, and AWS for infrastructure. QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: - Strong technical foundations: proven experience building, shipping, and evolving production software with deep expertise in at least one part of the stack and confidence working across frontend and backend systems. You understand how early technical and product decisions scale and evolve. - Product judgement and design sensibility: deep appreciation for how products look, feel, and work. Understanding that developer experience is the product—from API clarity to interface details. Strong opinions, loosely held, with the ability to challenge assumptions, simplify complexity, and know what to leave out. - Ownership and pragmatic execution: ability to take problems end-to-end with high ownership and autonomy, navigate ambiguity, make decisions with incomplete information, and take responsibility for outcomes. Bias toward shipping with judgment about when to iterate quickly versus invest in stronger foundations. - Engineering craft: commitment to quality—clean APIs, robust backend logic, thoughtful interactions, edge-case handling, and performance. High standards for both technical quality and delivered experience. - Curiosity and collaboration: willingness to wear multiple hats, collaborate openly, and contribute to a small team. Openness to learning new technologies and AI-assisted development while maintaining code intimacy, sound judgment, and ownership. - Experience with payments, billing, or developer tools is a strong plus. Open-source contributions and side projects are valued.
