Encord is building the universal data layer for AI, helping 300+ AI teams train and run models on the right data. The platform indexes, curates, annotates, and evaluates data across the full AI lifecycle from development through production. Trusted by Woven by Toyota, AXA, UiPath, Zipline, and others, Encord has raised $60M in Series C funding and operates as a team of 100+. The Data as a Service (DaaS) team is tackling a critical gap in AI infrastructure: the physical world remains largely unlabeled at scale. While LLMs benefited from internet-scale text data, robotics, autonomous vehicles, and surgical systems lack the labeled datasets needed for advancement. Customers provide robotics video, LiDAR, and medical imaging; the team returns high-quality labels. This requires orchestrating work between ML models and expert human annotators, with quality measured rigorously rather than subjectively, serving both AI labs and a global annotation workforce on a single platform. The work is largely greenfield with no legacy constraints or established playbook—what you ship becomes the foundation for the next wave of AI built on physical-world data. In this role, you will: - Own end-to-end product decisions without intermediaries: talk directly to customers, determine priorities, make product calls, ship, and own outcomes (wins and blast radius alike). - Tackle genuinely unsolved problems: design seamless workflows where human reviewers and AI models hand work back and forth thousands of times per hour; build one flexible product serving robotics, AV, and healthcare without fragmenting into three separate systems. - Drive full ownership from product and design through architecture, deployment, monitoring, and impact measurement. - Work autonomously on projects while collaborating with a lean, high-trust team on challenging problems. - Operate in a 4 days/week in-office model (San Francisco FiDi) with flexibility and autonomy. Requirements: - Proven builder mentality: founded a company, were engineer #1, or have been the engineer PMs route ambiguous problems to. - Significant experience: personally built and maintained systems from scratch; understand trade-offs in shipping reliable, performant software at speed. - Customer-first mindset: prefer discovery calls, direct feedback, and hands-on iteration over ticket-based communication. - Strong team player: raise the people around you and help others contribute their best work.
