Dirac is building BuildOS, a creative suite for manufacturing engineering that consolidates fragmented workflows (process plans, MBOMs, routings, work instructions, spreadsheets, PLM, ERP) into a single coherent environment. Manufacturing engineers currently rebuild context across multiple tools whenever designs change; BuildOS aims to become the canonical definition of how products are produced—analogous to how Figma owns the design file and GitHub owns the repo.
As an early Product Designer, you will own projects end-to-end from research through release, defining both the interaction model and design language for an entirely new software category. You'll shape Structure (flows, information architecture, wireframes) and Surface (layout, typography, color, interaction polish) across complex domains including 3D CAD interaction, structured data authoring, document generation, and shop floor workflows.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design across BuildOS, including 3D CAD interaction, structured data authoring, document generation, and shop floor workflows
- Define patterns, primitives, and interactions that make complex workflows feel coherent
- Understand current spreadsheets, internal tools, and manual processes, then design faster, more complete, more trustworthy replacements
- Become fluent in manufacturing workflows: BOMs, BOPs, work instructions, GD&T, PMI, revision control, work centers, takt time
- Work directly with manufacturing engineers, operators, and customers, including factory floor visits
- Establish Dirac's design language, design system, and product standards as BuildOS grows
- Partner closely with Product and Engineering from exploration through implementation and release
- Contribute beyond traditional design through user research, prototyping, frontend development, and product polish
The role offers the opportunity to define the interaction model and design language for an entirely new category of software serving users who have spent careers working around tools not built for them.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of product design experience, ideally designing complex B2B, technical, or professional software
- High technical acumen and experience designing complex systems, workflows, and information-heavy interfaces
- Strong interaction and visual design skills, from early concepts and prototypes through polished production-ready designs
- Experience owning projects end-to-end, including research, problem definition, design, implementation, and release
- Strong product judgment and ability to balance user needs, technical constraints, business priorities, and speed
- High attention to detail and strong bar for craft, usability, and visual quality
- Ability to self-direct, prioritize independently, and thrive in fast-moving, ambiguous environments
- Experience using qualitative and quantitative insights to inform design decisions
- Familiarity with user research, usability testing, and prototyping
- Ability to clearly communicate design decisions and rationale across Product and Engineering
- Bias toward shipping and iteration over perfection
- Curiosity about how physical things get made (manufacturing experience not required, but willingness to build expertise)
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience designing CAD, PLM, EDA, developer tools, data tools, industrial software, or other professional-grade applications
- Experience designing complex data models, tables, hierarchical information, timelines, graphs, or 3D/spatial interfaces
- Experience building or maintaining a design system
- Ability to contribute frontend code (React, TypeScript, HTML, CSS)
- Experience designing zero-to-one products or working at early-stage startups
- Experience conducting research with specialized technical users
- Exposure to manufacturing, mechanical engineering, robotics, aerospace, automotive, industrial engineering, or hardware development
