Vanta is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to own the architectural foundation of its enterprise organizational model. This is a defining technical role within the newly chartered Program Structure and Trust group, responsible for designing and delivering a multi-quarter initiative that enables enterprise customers to bring their complex compliance and security structures natively into Vanta's Governance and Compliance platform.
You will own the design and phased delivery of Vanta's enterprise org model, including hierarchical product lines and business units, isolated data access and ownership, cross-cutting audit workflows, scoped approvals, and data residency support for EU and GovCloud environments. A core responsibility is defining and evolving the platform abstractions that allow it to absorb structurally diverse and often conflicting enterprise requirements, solving for the general case rather than one-off customer accommodations.
The role requires retrofitting a live production system toward a multi-tenant org structure—designing safe migration paths, sequencing delivery incrementally, and preserving continuity for existing customers as the architecture evolves. You will carve out and ship meaningful customer value each quarter while progressing toward the full solution, requiring product judgment, direct engagement with enterprise customers, and discipline in drawing clean increment lines through a complex problem space.
You will drive execution across squads outside your direct area, building alignment through technical clarity and credibility rather than authority. Partnership with Engineering leadership, Product, and Design is essential to translate the long-term vision into phased, deliverable work. You will set the technical standard for the group, define patterns others build to, shape architecture across teams, and model the engineering excellence the charter is organized around.
Success requires 15+ years of deep backend engineering experience with a track record of leading complex, multi-quarter technical initiatives in fast-paced, product-focused environments. You should have designed platform abstractions that absorbed messy, conflicting enterprise requirements across diverse customer bases and have a history of shipping in stages, moving large structurally complex problems forward incrementally. Experience operating effectively across squads and teams you don't own, deep familiarity with enterprise architectural patterns (tenancy models, RBAC, data isolation, scoped permissions), and strong communication skills are essential. Data residency or GovCloud exposure is a plus. The ideal candidate is open to using AI to amplify skills and strengthen work.
