North is building the next-generation cloud, AI, and data spend management platform. The company helps enterprises gain real-time visibility, control, and automation over their digital asset finances as AI accelerates demand for scalable infrastructure and cloud costs soar. As the first Principal Software Engineer focused on frontend, you will set the technical direction for how North's product looks, feels, and works. You'll work closely with the Product Designer and Experience team to build and evolve the design system and component library that all other teams depend on. Key responsibilities include: - Setting technical direction for North's frontend architecture and documenting the vision and rationale - Building and evolving the design system and component library with the Product Designer, rolling it out across the app - Raising the bar on performance, accessibility, and interaction quality, focusing on how the app feels to use - Establishing frontend patterns, testing practices, and review standards, embedding them into the tools engineers and coding agents use - Converting recurring frontend questions, review comments, and inconsistencies into design system and framework improvements that reach existing screens, not just new ones - Partnering with product teams on new features to ensure they land well for customers and fit the system - Helping shape how Noros (North's AI agent) shows up across the app as a consistent part of the experience - Coaching engineers through code review, design review, and pairing Your job is to make the right way to build frontend the easy way, so any engineer at North can ship changes that are consistent, fast, and well tested, and it's hard to ship ones that aren't. You'll lead by shipping with teams rather than handing down standards. Requirements: - 10+ years building production web applications with deep expertise in modern frontend architecture - Track record of setting frontend direction across multiple teams, not just one codebase - Experience building and scaling a design system with designers, from components to adoption, treating it as a product for the engineers who use it - Strong judgment about performance, state management, and data-heavy interfaces (charts, tables, filters) - Still write a lot of code; lead by shipping with teams rather than handing down standards - Clear writing and communication, including explaining tradeoffs to people outside engineering - Pragmatic, informed use of AI coding tools, with judgment about when they help and when they don't - Low ego and a habit of bringing people along Nice to have: - Experience with financial, analytics, or data visualization products - Experience building conversational or AI-driven interfaces - Familiarity with FinOps or cloud billing concepts - Experience at a growing startup where the frontend outgrew its first architecture
