Snowflake's Elastic Global Services team builds the highly available, scalable, multi-tenant cloud services platform that underpins Snowflake's data cloud offering. The team handles autoscaling of VMs across cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP), cluster management, workload orchestration, and infrastructure optimization. As a Principal Software Engineer, you will design and implement scalable distributed systems, analyze and solve fault-tolerance and high-availability issues, mentor junior engineers, and ensure operational readiness of services at large scale.
Key responsibilities include:
- Solving real business needs at scale through software engineering and analytical problem-solving
- Designing and implementing scalable distributed systems for cloud services
- Analyzing fault-tolerance, high-availability, performance, and scale challenges
- Mentoring and growing junior engineers on the team
- Understanding trade-offs between consistency, durability, and costs to build solutions meeting rapidly growing service demands
- Ensuring operational readiness and meeting customer commitments on availability and performance
The infrastructure self-optimizes, provides high availability and data protection across multiple cloud providers, allowing users to focus on using their data rather than managing infrastructure. This is a unique opportunity to make significant impact on Snowflake's elastic, large-scale, high-performance computing environment.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 15+ years of industry experience designing, building, and supporting large-scale infrastructure in production
- Experience building large-scale distributed fault-tolerant infrastructure
- Experience in container orchestration, cluster management, or autoscaling
- Excellent understanding of operating systems concepts including multi-threading, memory management, networking, storage, performance, and scale
- Solid understanding of the internals of Kubernetes, Mesos, OpenShift, or other container platforms
