Cloudflare is seeking an experienced Principal Software Engineer to lead the technical architecture and development of Town Lake, an internal data lakehouse platform built on Trino and Apache Iceberg. This role involves designing and executing strategic technical architecture for highly visible, critical data infrastructure serving dozens of teams across the company including Billing, Trust & Safety, Developer Platform, GTM, and Support.
You will lead the design and development of tools, infrastructure, and data pipelines across the full stack, including access control, ingestion frameworks, AI-driven data classification, semantic and governance layers, data products/ELT platforms, dashboarding, and query tools. The team is agentic-first, leveraging AI comprehensively to accelerate development. All services are built on Cloudflare's own platform, utilizing R2 and R2 Data Catalog for storage, Workers and Workers AI for compute, Workflows for orchestration, Durable Objects and D1 for state, and Cloudflare Access for authentication.
Key responsibilities include defining technical architecture for data infrastructure, leading design and development of tools to improve and scale data systems, creating data pipelines and products for internal stakeholders, becoming a subject matter expert on data platforms and infrastructure, working across a diverse tech stack (Kubernetes, Trino, Iceberg, Clickhouse, PostgreSQL, Go, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python), and mentoring junior engineers.
This is a high-impact, high-visibility role with foundational influence on a new, exciting platform. The Town Lake team is small but growing with outsized impact across the company. You'll have the opportunity to shape the direction of data infrastructure at a company handling nearly 25% of Internet traffic.
