Zscaler is seeking a Principal Software Engineer specializing in C programming, networking, and dataplane architecture to join the Engineering Team in San Jose (hybrid, 3 days/week in office). You will report to the Senior Director of Software Development Engineering.
In this role, you will design and implement high-performance data path features for load balancing and Layer 7 protocol implementations, directly enhancing the scalability and security of Zscaler's global networking infrastructure. You will leverage deep C programming expertise and autonomous ownership to drive complex architectural projects from conception through large-scale deployment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and implement datapath features related to load balancers, firewall rules, and L7 protocol implementations
- Apply expert knowledge of C programming, data structures, and algorithms to build high-performance systems
- Independently drive moderately complex projects from conception to deployment with full ownership
- Utilize deep knowledge of networking protocols and services including DNS, HTTP, TCP/IP, and SSL/TLS
- Leverage Unix/Linux operating systems knowledge to optimize networking and security applications

Minimum qualifications:
- 12+ years building large-scale commercial networking and security applications with proficiency in C or C++
- Strong foundational knowledge in data structures and algorithms
- Working experience with Linux, Unix, or similar operating systems
- BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience
- Demonstrated curiosity and active exploration of AI tools, with proven history of integrating new technologies into workflows
Preferred qualifications:
- Exposure to AI-assisted software development tools and workflows
- Advanced knowledge of DNS, HTTP, TCP/IP, and SSL/TLS protocols
