Okta is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the technical vision and architecture of the Sign-In Widget (SIW) Platform, a highly secure, open-source login platform used by millions globally. This is a staff-level individual contributor role within the Enterprise Access team, which processes billions of authentications monthly and operates a 99.99% available cloud platform.
You will own the long-term technical strategy for SIW, ensuring enterprise-grade standards for security, scalability, and performance. Key responsibilities include designing and implementing core platform features and foundational framework components that enable extensibility for internal feature teams and external customers. You'll collaborate with Product Management, Design, and peer Principal Engineers to shape the product roadmap and translate complex business requirements into sustainable technical strategies.
As a technical leader, you will spearhead resolution of the most complex technical challenges—performance bottlenecks, security vulnerabilities, and architectural limitations. You'll champion technical excellence by identifying and advocating for new technologies and approaches that advance Okta's identity platform. Your work will focus on optimizing applications for speed, scalability, and responsiveness across devices and browsers, writing clean and well-tested code, and proactively addressing technical debt.
Minimum qualifications include 12+ years of software development experience with at least 8 years designing and building complex, enterprise-grade web applications. You must demonstrate a proven track record as a technical leader architecting and delivering large-scale, high-impact projects. Deep mastery of the modern frontend ecosystem is required—expert-level knowledge of React and TypeScript, with nuanced understanding of state management, component architecture, and performance optimization. You should have exceptional problem-solving skills, the ability to navigate ambiguity, and a proven ability to mentor senior engineers and influence technical direction across multiple teams.
Technical qualifications include familiarity with modern frontend stacks (JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Webpack/Vite), solid understanding of ES6+, HTML5, and CSS3, familiarity with server-side languages such as Java or C#, and experience with testing frameworks (Jest, React Testing Library, Playwright).
