Zscaler is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join the Platform Convergence department, reporting to the Sr. Director of Software Engineering. This hybrid role is based in Bangalore and focuses on designing and scaling high-performance backend services that drive the evolution of Zscaler's converged Zero Trust Exchange platform.
In this position, you will design and build a low-latency, high-throughput data forwarding plane using Rust and async/await models for efficient service-oriented infrastructure. You'll develop distributed, scalable systems with a heavy focus on concurrency, fault tolerance, and messaging patterns. A key responsibility is implementing and maintaining gRPC-based APIs and services to integrate the forwarding plane with control and orchestration layers. You'll optimize system performance through deep profiling across kernel-space and user-space, and drive technical excellence through code reviews, architectural discussions, documentation, and mentoring of junior engineers.
The ideal candidate brings 14+ years of software development experience with specific expertise in systems programming and Rust. You should have extensive experience with async frameworks such as Tokio or async-std, and a proven track record of building resilient, observable, and horizontally scalable distributed systems. Deep understanding of Linux fundamentals, networking, container-based environments, CI/CD, and kernel-user space interaction is essential. A foundational understanding of AI/ML technologies and experience leveraging or securing AI-driven solutions is required.
Preferred qualifications include experience with AI-assisted developer tools and automated profiling, professional experience with systems languages like C/C++ or Go in performance-critical environments, and hands-on experience with kernel-space technologies like eBPF, XDP, or DPDK. Familiarity with gRPC, Protobufs, and L2–L4 networking protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, QUIC) is a plus.
Zscaler values impact over activity, constructive debate, customer obsession, collaboration, ownership, and accountability. The company operates as an AI-forward enterprise, leveraging the world's largest security data lake to power its cloud-native platform.
