Carlsmed is a healthtech company focused on improving outcomes and reducing costs in spine surgery through its aprevo® personalized surgery platform. The Principal Software Architect will provide technical leadership across the organization, defining scalable architectures for software systems supporting proprietary implants, instrumentation, and design automation.
Key responsibilities include defining the technical vision and platform roadmap, designing scalable architectures for distributed systems, establishing technical standards and best practices, leading architectural reviews, and mentoring senior engineers in architectural thinking. The role requires driving innovation, collaborating with senior leadership to align technical strategy with business goals, and identifying/mitigating technical risks.
Specific technical focus areas include leading Node.js-based microservices architecture, designing GraphQL schema architecture across services, establishing patterns for React applications and component libraries, architecting PostgreSQL solutions for high-scale applications, and defining API standards and integration patterns. The architect will also lead proof-of-concept initiatives and technical spikes to validate architectural decisions.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, 10–15 years of software systems experience with 5+ years leading development teams, deep expertise in Node.js and distributed systems, advanced GraphQL knowledge, expert-level React architecture understanding, and extensive PostgreSQL experience at scale. Preferred qualifications include spine/orthopedics domain experience, Prisma expertise, modern frameworks like Remix, iOS enterprise architecture, multi-cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure), API gateway/service mesh technologies, event-driven architectures, and security/compliance knowledge.
