Plug is an automotive fintech startup building a marketplace exclusively for used electric vehicles. The company enables consumers to receive instant cash offers backed by data-driven pricing and battery analysis, while dealers bid in real time on inventory. Founded in 2023 by former Tesla executives, Plug has facilitated $100M in EV sales and is backed by a $20M Series A from Lightspeed Venture Partners.
You will own the fintech product stack end-to-end, focusing on money movement, payments, and lending-adjacent products. This is a director-level role designed for independent operation: you will manage the full flow of funds across consumers, dealers, lenders, and banking partners without requiring hands-on involvement from company leadership on day-to-day fintech decisions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own product strategy and roadmap for money movement: consumer payouts, dealer payments, auction settlement, lien payoffs, and title-related fund flows
- Design and ship systems that move money instantly and reliably at scale, replacing manual processes with real infrastructure
- Manage and grow relationships with external partners—banks, payment processors, lien/title servicers, and lending partners—negotiating terms, integrations, and SLAs directly
- Run the full flow of funds independently: origination, disbursement, settlement, reconciliation, and payoff, with visibility into fund location and status at every stage
- Partner closely with Engineering, Risk, Finance, and Operations to ensure compliance, auditability, and speed
- Identify and scope opportunities for lending or financing-adjacent products (e.g., dealer floor plan, consumer bridge financing, payment plans)
- Build operating rhythm, metrics, and monitoring to catch and resolve payment or settlement issues before they become customer-facing
- Design partnership ecosystem and negotiate with banking and payments partners
The role is based in Sawtelle (between Santa Monica and West Los Angeles) with relocation assistance provided. San Francisco-based candidates are also considered without relocation requirement.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 7+ years in product management
- Meaningful experience owning payments end-to-end at a marketplace or large payments platform company
- Track record of managing external stakeholders directly (banks, servicers, processors, lending partners), including negotiating terms and owning relationships
- Direct experience with fund flow mechanics: settlement, disbursement, reconciliation, payoff processing, and associated compliance and risk considerations
- Demonstrated ability to operate independently at senior level as final decision-maker on fintech product questions
- Comfort operating in ambiguous, fast-moving environments as first and only product owner for a domain
- Strong technical fluency to go deep with engineers on system design, data models, and API tradeoffs for payment infrastructure
- International or cross-border payments experience is a plus
- Prior title, marketplace, auction/lending experience in automotive or comparable regulated industry is a plus
- Bias toward building lean, fast infrastructure over off-the-shelf solutions
