Salary: USD 120,000 - 180,000 / annual
Bankrate, a Red Ventures portfolio company, is seeking a Principal Product Designer to lead strategic design initiatives and shape consumer experiences. You will report to the Head of Design and work closely with Product leaders and the Lead Consumer Researcher.
In this role, you'll own end-to-end design strategy and execution across multiple dimensions:
**Consumer Vision & Strategy:** Form and advocate for a long-range consumer experience vision that prioritizes consumer advocacy. Make it concrete through concepts, principles, and prototypes that teams can build toward.
**Strategic Implementation:** Make high-level decisions on how brand and consumer experiences are implemented. Lead large-scale projects independently or with other designers, driving decisions that span the organization.
**Research Coordination & Discovery:** Partner with the Lead Consumer Researcher to define research priorities, including generative discovery that looks beyond the current roadmap. Frame research questions and ensure findings directly influence product decisions.
**Agentic Systems Enablement:** Build systems that enable designers and AI agents to work effectively together. This includes owning the design system, UX copy system, and their documentation, structure, code connectivity, and exposure to agentic tools. Apply systems thinking to determine where rules help versus slow progress.
**Cross-Functional Innovation:** Identify and drive consumer innovation opportunities that span multiple functions. Make the case for new initiatives and partner with product and engineering to launch them.
**Mentorship & Design Org Capability:** Mentor designers at all levels through direct feedback, critique, and collaborative problem-solving. Elevate team capabilities through workflows, tooling, standards, and skills that others can adopt.
You are technical and understand code and engineering workflows. You prototype in code when it answers questions faster than meetings, know which work needs polish and which doesn't, and move work through systems without waiting for hand-offs.
**Requirements:**
- Portfolio demonstrating org-level design impact that changed product strategy or team operations across multiple teams
- Proven track record setting and shipping against a long-range consumer vision
- Background in fintech, startups, or consumer advocacy
- Research fluency: experience running or directing generative discovery and working effectively with dedicated researchers
- Technical fluency with codebases, agentic tools, and component systems (shadCN, Tailwind, Next.js); ability to prototype in code and contribute in GitHub
- Demonstrated craft judgment regarding when polish matters versus when rough answers suffice, including accessibility considerations
- Experience building or rebuilding a design system or similar shared system in production, with consideration for how agents use it
- Ability to mentor and elevate others; earn trust with PMs, engineers, and designers outside direct reports
- Must be able to work Eastern Standard Time hours
