Rocket Lab is seeking a Principal Network Software Engineer to lead software development efforts for space-to-space communications, space-to-ground communications, payload software, and data security on a constellation of spacecraft. This role manages the software development and integration of routers, radios, and laser communication devices across multiple spacecraft platforms.
Key responsibilities include managing software development and integration of communication systems on spacecraft constellations; overseeing suppliers and subcontractors to develop and test integrated systems; interfacing with subcontractors, consultants, and internal engineering teams to maintain product development plans and meet milestones; designing and developing simulation and test approaches for constellation networking; defining KPIs for contractors and internal teams; setting development cadence for feature drops; developing staffing plans with senior leadership; planning major integration points and testing between teams; driving best practices for feedback collection and continuous improvement; and establishing software development standards and procedures to ensure quality and compliance with customer requirements.
The successful candidate will have 12+ years of relevant industry experience, including 3+ years managing projects and interfacing with external contractors. Required qualifications include a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, aerospace engineering, or similar technical discipline; thorough understanding of network software and software development lifecycle; experience with Jira for development management; knowledge of systems engineering methods including systems trades, requirements management, performance characterization, and interface management; active TS/SCI security clearance; and U.S. citizenship. Nice-to-have qualifications include a master's degree in aerospace or related field, experience with SDA NEBULA architectures, cybersecurity and encryption expertise, agile team leadership experience, project management certifications (PMP, APMP), and proficiency with engineering management tools.
This role reports to the Senior Director of Space Systems Software and is based at Rocket Lab's Long Beach headquarters.
