Relativity Space is building the Terran R rocket to deliver payloads to orbit and advance commercial spaceflight. The Tooling and Factory Automation team designs and develops manufacturing equipment, fixtures, and automation systems that enable rocket production at scale.
As Principal Mechanical Engineer, Tooling, you will lead the design and development of high-quality tooling and factory automation solutions for the Terran vehicle and Aeon engine programs. You'll work at the intersection of design, manufacturing, and automation—developing everything from large-scale structural fixtures to specialized tools that directly enable production.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop production and development tooling and automation solutions for Terran and Aeon programs
- Integrate mechanical design and analysis concepts across multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment
- Apply sound design and drafting standards (ASME Y14.5) to create tooling definitions
- Handle diverse technical challenges including material handling, assembly fixtures, off-loaders, rotisseries, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental chambers, and custom machines
- Collaborate closely with component designers, manufacturing engineers, and integration teams to optimize cradle-to-grave metrics: safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, lifespan, and maintainability
You'll have significant autonomy to make decisions, propose solutions, and see your work implemented on the factory floor. This role sits within the manufacturing organization and directly shapes how rockets and factories are built. The team is at the forefront of Relativity's factory automation scaling efforts, making this a unique opportunity to influence production methodology and facility design.
