Berkshire Grey is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join a new product development team designing and delivering novel, integrated systems for industrial customers. This is a senior individual contributor role focused on mechanical design excellence, from conceptualization through customer deployment.
You will own mechanical design responsibilities across the full product lifecycle: understanding customer operational needs and constraints, defining system-level requirements, designing practical solutions, executing validation tests, and transforming concepts into robust production designs. You'll work independently on system pieces while collaborating with other mechanical engineers and cross-functional disciplines (electrical, controls, manufacturing) to ensure cohesive system design.
Key responsibilities include:
- Translating customer challenges into system-level requirements and subsystem decomposition
- Designing and testing candidate solutions to validate manufacturability and field performance
- Creating production-ready designs using SolidWorks and PLM systems, including BOMs, fabrication drawings, and assembly instructions
- Hands-on prototyping and iteration using shop tools
- System design analyses (reliability, DFM/A, cost optimization, structural/vibration)
- Coordinating with suppliers, machinists, and contract manufacturers for on-time delivery
- Overseeing design and test activities of junior team members, reinforcing team standards
- Traveling to supplier and customer sites (up to 10%) to support builds and installations
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering
- 8+ years at an OEM with successfully launched products in volume manufacturing
- Expert-level 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred): 2D drawings, simulations, PDM
- Significant experience designing motion control systems with sensors, actuators, and complex mechanisms
- Industrial systems design balancing cost and durability over equipment lifecycle
- Structural and vibration analysis experience
- Mastery of ASME standards, GD&T (Y14.5-2009), DFM/A, Six Sigma, tolerance analysis
- Failure avoidance methods: DFMEA/PFMEA, fault tree analysis
- Strong technical writing (specs, test plans, reports)
- Ability to work effectively with customers, suppliers, and contract manufacturers
- Strategic risk thinking across safety, design, manufacturing, and reliability
Preferred: minimal electrical design capability (harnesses, wiring, grounding), understanding of neighboring discipline challenges.
