Swarm Aero is building the world's largest swarming UAV network and Command & Control software to coordinate thousands of heterogeneous autonomous aircraft. The company is founded by experienced aerospace engineers from Scaled Composites, Airbus, Archer Aviation, Blue Origin, and Boom Supersonic, and is backed by Series A funding. As Principal Engineer for Real-Time Visualization, you will architect the frontend for Legion's Command & Control platform—the software that enables a single operator to plan, direct, and execute missions across a networked swarm of aircraft in real time, even over intermittent communications. This role goes far beyond typical dashboard work; you'll design and ship novel UI concepts for representing vehicle telemetry, sensor data, scheduling, crew resources, and data link management in a problem space with minimal prior art. Key responsibilities include: - Owning and architecting the frontend for a C2 system directing heterogeneous aircraft swarms - Building real-time, collaborative interfaces for controlling large numbers of aircraft simultaneously with graceful degradation during comms loss - Designing new UI concepts for dense telemetry visualization and mission planning with no existing playbook - Setting frontend architecture, patterns, and standards for the engineering team - Shipping frequently with strong CI/CD, QA, and DevSecOps practices You bring 8+ years of production frontend development with a track record of owning frontend architecture. You have deep experience with React or comparable modern frameworks and a history of mentoring engineers and setting technical direction. Ideally, you have experience with both immediate mode (games, simulation) and retained mode UI paradigms, performance-sensitive application development, video streaming protocols, WebGL/OpenGL, and geospatial applications. This is an opportunity to shape how humans command autonomous systems at scale—work currently being defined in real time by a small, world-class team. You'll have direct impact on a critical national security mission and meaningful equity in a high-growth defense technology company. Note: ITAR compliance required. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or eligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
