Orenda develops, builds, owns, and operates battery energy storage projects in dense urban environments to bridge the gap between renewables and electricity consumption. The company is scaling rapidly across New York City with a mission to make the grid more efficient.
As Principal Engineer, Development, you serve as Orenda's owner's engineer, setting and continuously raising the engineering standard for the NYC portfolio. You direct engineering partners who execute detailed design rather than producing all design work in-house. You author specifications that guide engineering partners and equipment selection, ensure every design complies with standards and applicable codes, and serve as the senior technical resource for the team. You lead through technical standards, design review, and mentorship.
Key responsibilities include: owning and maintaining Orenda's engineering standards and technical specifications governing design, equipment selection, and construction of the NYC energy storage portfolio in compliance with all applicable codes and AHJ and utility requirements; authoring technical specifications that guide engineering partners and equipment selection; deriving site-specific technical requirements and recommending equipment line-ups; ensuring design compliance by reviewing engineering partners' design sets for adherence to Orenda standards and consistency across engineering trades; identifying technical risks early in the design process; serving as the team's senior technical resource providing responsive support and resolving technical escalations; providing technical direction and mentorship to engineering partners and internal staff; coordinating with Orenda's in-house Energy Management System (EMS) team to integrate SCADA and controls requirements into project designs; supporting procurement with technical evaluation of OEM capabilities and product fitness; incorporating feedback from Construction and Asset Management teams to continuously improve design standards; providing technical oversight during commissioning; supporting new product development; and documenting and sharing good engineering practices and lessons learned.
You report to the Director of Development and work within the Project Execution Division's Development department, which leads late-stage development of each project, driving the detailed engineering and permitting work required to move a project from initial approval to construction-ready.
