Vitalize Care is building the labor and capacity operating system for health systems, helping hospitals intelligently forecast demand, match staff, and coordinate patients. The company has raised over $32M and serves mission-critical functions that hospitals rely on continuously. As Principal Engineer, you'll own the decision engine that powers staffing recommendations and workflows. This role sits at the intersection of complex operational logic and user-facing software—you'll design systems that balance staffing rules, hospital policies, patient needs, and operational constraints while remaining transparent and trustworthy to clinical leaders. Key responsibilities include: - Designing and building the decision logic behind staffing recommendations, alerts, and workflows - Owning systems that reason through messy operational reality and turn it into actionable software - Partnering with Product, Design, and other Engineers to build complex solutions that are intuitive for hospital staff - Working directly with clinical leaders to understand real-world staffing decision-making - Building explainable systems so users understand why recommendations are made and can trust, validate, or override them - Defining the boundary between automation and human judgment as Vitalize safely expands automation - Continuously improving systems using customer feedback and production data You'll bring expertise in TypeScript, strong systems thinking, and the ability to reason through complicated edge cases. Experience across the full tech stack is valued, as is comfort working directly with customers. The stack includes Bun, TypeScript, Effect, React, TanStack Router, and Planetscale. Vitalize values ownership, customer obsession, candor, and experimentation. The engineering team builds the intelligence that powers hospital operations—this role is central to evolving Vitalize from reporting software into software that actively runs hospital operations.
