Graphcore, part of the SoftBank Group, is a leading innovator in AI compute hardware and software infrastructure. The company develops systems that unlock next-generation AI breakthroughs and enable widespread AI adoption across industries. You will join the System Management team within the Software Platform group as a Principal Engineer, providing technical leadership for critical interfaces that manage system state for internal and external customers. This is a hands-on role combining individual technical contribution with mentorship and cross-functional leadership. Key responsibilities include: - Converting system management direction into technical plans, engineering priorities and deliverable work - Providing technical leadership for architecture and design decisions, building alignment across teams - Acting as technical authority for assigned System Management areas, leading large complex engineering initiatives - Mentoring engineers across system management, hardware lifecycle management, deployment automation and production operations - Owning key technical outcomes across the full software lifecycle: design, implementation, testing, integration, deployment, observability and production readiness - Identifying and leading improvements to reliability, scalability and operability across the platform - Collaborating with Hardware, Firmware, Platform Software and Datacenter Operations teams on system-level issues - Improving engineering standards including CI/CD, Infrastructure-as-Code, automated testing and incident learning - Serving as senior technical escalation point while creating reusable knowledge and automation You bring substantial experience designing, building and operating Linux-based infrastructure or distributed systems. You have demonstrated technical leadership on complex initiatives involving multiple teams, influencing architecture decisions across boundaries without formal authority. You excel at translating broad technical goals into scoped plans with clear milestones, risks and priorities. Technical expertise includes: RESTful API development and Go programming (with Bash and Python for systems automation), deep Kubernetes and container runtime experience, production workload operation, Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform/OpenTofu, Ansible), source control and CI/CD (GitLab, GitHub Actions, Git), hardware management interfaces (Redfish, IPMI), and strong Linux systems engineering and operational debugging. You have proven ability to develop other engineers through mentoring, design reviews and coaching, with clear communication skills to persuade and build alignment.
