Orenda develops, builds, owns, and operates battery energy storage systems (BESS) in urban environments to bridge the gap between renewable energy and electricity consumption. The Asset Management department is responsible for safe, compliant, and profitable long-term operation of the entire fleet.
As Principal Engineer, you are the fleet's technical authority and engineering conscience. Reporting to the Director of Asset Management, you establish the technical foundation for all asset operations from commissioning through decommissioning. Your engineering judgment and sign-off are binding: no asset enters the fleet, no maintenance program governs it, and no engineering change occurs without your approval.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead technical due diligence for all new asset handovers from construction, including final engineering review and binding sign-off on as-built documentation, system configurations, and commissioning data
- Develop, own, and maintain master preventative maintenance plans, scopes of work, and technical specifications executed by Operations & Maintenance teams
- Develop and own the departmental safety program, including site-specific electrical safety plans, Emergency Action Plans, and Lockout-Tagout procedures
- Own Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), alarm rationalization, and response playbooks for BESS and balance-of-plant systems
- Provide and approve all engineering solutions for on-site modifications, retrofits, and major repairs; lead complex root cause analysis efforts
- Define capacity and round-trip efficiency test protocols; capture warranty-grade performance baselines at commissioning
- Define EMS/dispatch architecture and lead integration testing
- Own commissioning acceptance, including FDNY acceptance testing coordination and punch list sign-off authority
- Proactively identify long-term technical risks to the fleet and own mitigation strategies
- Serve as primary engineering resource for Operations & Maintenance and Central Operations; define all technical SOPs
- Author technical bulletins, SOPs, and MOPs for complex maintenance; define CMMS engineering data standards
- Define and own Asset Management design and equipment standards across all projects
- Engage Construction and Development teams to ensure each site is designed and built to specifications before acceptance
- Build and lead the engineering team (integration, maintenance, sustainment) as the function scales
- Review project designs and equipment selections during development to ensure conformance with Asset Management requirements
- Own lessons-learned processes and continuous improvement initiatives
This role is ideal for a senior power systems engineer with experience catching design gaps, building maintenance programs from failure modes, and wanting their engineering judgment to set the standard for an entire fleet.
