Graphcore, a leading AI compute innovator and member of the SoftBank Group, is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to serve as the technical authority for electrical infrastructure in its Data Center Engineering team. This role is responsible for architecting and delivering safe, resilient, and scalable electrical systems for high-density AI computing environments.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading electrical architecture development across the full lifecycle: conceptual studies, detailed design, construction, commissioning, operation, and lifecycle improvement
- Developing electrical standards, specifications, reference designs, and acceptance criteria for power distribution and conversion systems
- Defining electrical protection and safety approaches for AC and DC systems, including fault detection, interruption, isolation, grounding, and safe maintenance procedures
- Designing resilient power solutions for dynamic AI and high-performance computing loads, including ride-through capabilities, energy buffering, backup generation, and utility interconnection
- Evaluating and recommending power conversion, protection, control, and energy-storage technologies based on safety, reliability, efficiency, and maintainability
- Leading technical due diligence, design reviews, failure-mode assessments, factory and site acceptance testing, and commissioning activities
- Directing engineering consultants and technology partners to ensure designs meet project requirements
- Collaborating with IT, silicon, mechanical, thermal, controls, operations, and sustainability teams to resolve cross-disciplinary challenges
- Supporting operational readiness, incident investigation, and root-cause analysis
- Mentoring engineers and providing technical guidance across projects
The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience, with substantial background delivering mission-critical electrical infrastructure in hyperscale data centers, colocation facilities, or comparable high-availability environments. Deep expertise in medium- and low-voltage AC systems, high-power DC distribution, power electronics, and electrical fault behavior and protection is essential. The role requires demonstrated ability to lead significant technical areas, make independent engineering decisions, and influence outcomes across multiple disciplines and external partners. Approximately 10% travel may be required. Candidate must reside in or be willing to relocate to Austin, Texas.
