IonQ is seeking a Principal Cloud Architect to lead the design, implementation, and governance of cloud infrastructure at a quantum computing company. This is a strategic technical role responsible for defining the organization's cloud platform strategy, translating business requirements into scalable architectures, and serving as the technical authority on cloud platforms across the company.
Key responsibilities include designing end-to-end cloud architectures spanning compute, storage, networking, identity, and data services; defining and maintaining cloud reference architectures and technical standards for engineering teams; leading cloud migration efforts including assessment, planning, and execution; evaluating and recommending cloud services and tools based on technical fit, cost, and operational impact; implementing infrastructure-as-code practices for repeatability and auditability; building security and compliance into architectures from inception, including identity and access management, encryption, network segmentation, and regulatory adherence; developing strategies for high availability, disaster recovery, scalability, and performance optimization; establishing cloud cost management and governance practices; providing technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams through architecture reviews and implementation guidance; staying current with emerging cloud technologies; and collaborating with stakeholders to align cloud strategy with organizational objectives.
The role requires deep expertise in cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), infrastructure-as-code tools, security architecture, and enterprise-scale system design. This is a senior individual contributor position that guides and mentors engineering teams without direct people management responsibilities. IonQ is a publicly traded quantum computing company (NYSE: IONQ) headquartered in College Park, Maryland, with operations across multiple US states and international locations. The company works with major cloud providers and enterprise customers including AWS and AstraZeneca.
