Form Energy is seeking a Principal Battery Engineer to join the Product Ecochemistry Performance team at their Berkeley, CA facility. This is a technical leadership role focused on advancing their iron-air battery technology through improved sensor strategy and cell state identification. You will drive the next generation of optimization for their breakthrough energy storage systems while the company scales manufacturing.
Key responsibilities include developing electrochemical signal strategies and state algorithms, with hands-on testing of novel sensors and measurement methods. You will create a roadmap for cell internal state determination and own cost analysis of sensor inclusion and performance optimization. The role involves establishing state-of-the-art prototype testing capabilities at the Berkeley facility and leading root cause analyses (RCAs) on product-level electrochemical phenomena impacting performance from field deployments.
You will establish frameworks and approaches for RCAs during initial deployments, ensuring successful scale-up through technology optimization and sustained customer experience throughout product lifetime. This is a critical position as Form Energy ramps production at their West Virginia manufacturing facility and fulfills contracts with leading US electric utilities.
Required qualifications include a PhD or MS with 10+ years of professional experience in battery or electrochemical engineering. You must have hands-on lab expertise and agility in prototyping environments, balancing safety, timelines, and quality. Experience leading technical teams through RCAs and strong data analysis skills are essential. Background in battery/cell state estimation, signal processing, or sensor integration into production systems is required.
