86 Repairs (operating as Parts Town) is the fastest-growing distributor of restaurant equipment, HVAC, and residential appliance parts. The company has been recognized on the Inc. 5000 list for 15 consecutive years and the Crain's Fast 50 list ten times, with a strong culture emphasizing safety, integrity, and innovation. As Principal Backend Engineer, you will design, architect, and optimize scalable microservices powering the eCommerce and enterprise platforms. You'll drive backend architecture decisions and ensure seamless integration across commerce, CMS, ERP, PIM, and marketing systems. This is a technical leadership role where you'll champion best practices in modularization, API design, and event-driven architectures while leveraging Node.js, TypeScript, Docker, Kubernetes, and serverless technologies. Key responsibilities include designing cloud-native microservices, establishing CI/CD practices and testing automation standards, defining logging and observability strategies, and ensuring high availability and disaster recovery. You'll collaborate across frontend, DevOps, and data teams to optimize system performance, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to architectural decisions alongside other principal engineers. The role requires 10+ years of backend system design experience, particularly in eCommerce and distributed applications. You'll need deep expertise in Node.js, TypeScript, and cloud-native platforms (Azure preferred), along with strong knowledge of databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis), microservices, event-driven architectures (Kafka, NATS), and API standards (REST, GraphQL, gRPC). Experience with testing frameworks (Jest, Mocha, Pact), CI/CD tools (Terraform, Pulumi), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), Kubernetes, and containerization is essential. Proven mentoring ability and cross-team collaboration skills are required.
