ButterflyMX is seeking an exceptional Principal or Staff-level engineer who has fundamentally transformed their development approach through AI. This is not a traditional role with an AI assistant bolted on—the company wants someone who actively uses AI agents, particularly Claude Code, to independently drive well-defined product initiatives from business requirements through secure, tested, production-ready software.
The ideal candidate is an excellent backend engineer first, grounded in ButterflyMX's stack: TypeScript services, MongoDB and relational databases, and cloud infrastructure across AWS and GCP. You will work closely with Product and Design teams, operating with unusually broad engineering ownership. Responsibilities include clarifying requirements with Product, developing technical specifications, coordinating with Design, orchestrating multiple coding agents, reviewing their output, deploying applications, managing infrastructure, and iterating on products post-launch.
You routinely run several Claude Code sessions or agents in parallel, knowing how to divide work effectively, provide proper context, establish feedback loops, and maintain quality and architectural integrity across multiple workstreams. You recognize that manually writing code should become rare in software development, but you're discerning about AI-generated output—identifying over-engineered solutions, unnecessary abstractions, weak tests, security gaps, and technically functional but fundamentally poor implementations.
Key responsibilities include partnering with Product to translate business requirements into clear technical specifications, identifying technical ambiguities and risks, and providing feedback when requirements introduce unnecessary complexity. You'll take approved initiatives end-to-end from requirements through deployment and ongoing operation, managing multiple products with limited day-to-day oversight. You'll design and maintain efficient, reusable, reliable code while delivering working software quickly without sacrificing reliability, maintainability, security, or user experience.
You'll operate an AI-native development environment, decomposing technical requirements into work executable by different agents, designing reusable Claude Code skills and workflows, and building feedback loops where agents review and improve one another's output. ButterflyMX's mission is to empower people to open and manage doors and gates from smartphones, with products installed in 20,000+ multifamily, commercial, gated community, and student-housing properties worldwide.
