Hermeus is a venture-backed defense aviation company focused on building the fastest aircraft in the world through rapid iterative prototyping and hardware-driven development. The company works with the Department of Defense to deliver high-speed capabilities for national security and allied defense needs. As a Powertrain Responsible Engineer, you will own the mechanical components and assemblies that generate and transmit power throughout hypersonic vehicles. This includes designing, developing, and optimizing gearboxes, generators, motors, and turbomachinery systems. You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of powertrain subsystems, from concept through production. The role requires strong foundational knowledge across multiple disciplines: mechanical engineering, fluid dynamics, thermal analysis, materials science, and manufacturing processes. You will apply first-principles thinking to solve complex engineering challenges in extreme operating environments. Your work will involve cross-functional collaboration with aerodynamics, structures, avionics, and manufacturing teams to integrate powertrain systems into complete vehicle architectures. Key responsibilities include: defining powertrain requirements and specifications; conducting detailed mechanical and thermal analysis; selecting and qualifying materials and components; managing design trade studies; supporting prototype build and test activities; and communicating technical requirements clearly in a fast-paced, iterative development environment. You will drive innovation in high-speed propulsion and power transmission while maintaining focus on manufacturability and reliability. This is a hands-on technical role for an experienced engineer who thrives in a startup environment, values rapid iteration, and is passionate about advancing aerospace technology at the cutting edge of hypersonic flight.
