Salary: USD 172,800 - 237,600 / annual

Archer Technologies is building an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for sustainable air mobility. As Powertrain Architect, you will own the design and sizing of the hybrid-electric propulsion system for next-generation eVTOL aircraft. You will evaluate and trade hybrid-electric powertrain architectures—series, parallel, and turbo-electric configurations—integrating battery energy storage, electric motors, inverters, and turboshaft-driven generators. From first principles, you will size electric motors and generators, validate designs with electromagnetic solvers, and generate performance and efficiency maps across the operating envelope. Thermal management is critical: you will size the complete thermal architecture including heat exchangers, ducting, and coolant routing using thermal and CFD tools. You will model battery charge/discharge behavior, C-rates, thermal response, and degradation to inform sizing and duty-cycle decisions. You will estimate thermal limits and duty cycles for motors, inverters, and batteries across representative mission profiles. Your powertrain models will integrate into Archer's vehicle-level multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) stack, supporting vehicle-level sizing and performance predictions. You will collaborate closely with Vehicle and Structures Architects on packaging, weight, and full powertrain integration to close the powertrain within the overall vehicle concept. Required: background in hybrid-electric, turbo-electric, or conventional turbine aircraft propulsion; experience in optimization and MDO; expertise in at least two of: electromagnetic motor/generator sizing, thermal management system sizing, or battery modeling. Desired: proficiency with ANSYS Maxwell, Motor-CAD, JMAG, ANSYS Icepak, or Fluent; strong Python for modeling and trade studies; turboshaft/turbine integration experience.
