xAI is seeking a Power System Engineer to join the High Power Engineering team supporting AI training campus infrastructure in Memphis, Tennessee. In this role, you will design, build, operate, and maintain electrical infrastructure for large-scale AI compute facilities, working with a small on-site team to scale high-capacity power systems aligned with compute demand. Key responsibilities include owning the single model of record for the Memphis campus, encompassing load flow, short-circuit, coordination, arc-flash, motor starting, harmonics, transient stability, and EMT studies for grid-forming inverter interaction. You will create and maintain sitewide power budgets, monitoring, and metering for mission-critical assets to optimize visibility and efficiency. The role requires performing detailed analysis on electrical power systems, including one-lines, three-lines, and studies that justify relay settings, with as-built model updates after commissioning. You will feed interconnection studies, relay settings, arc-flash labels, and battery storage sizing from a unified model, eliminating shadow models across pillars. You'll develop standardized study cases for hall additions, storage dispatch, islanding, and black-start scenarios. Compliance with NFPA 70, 70B, 70E, NESC, and IEEE standards is essential, with safety and engineering excellence as top priorities. The position requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or related discipline, plus 3+ years of experience in power systems design, analysis, and studies focused on high-power, high-voltage systems. Preferred qualifications include proficiency with power systems analysis software (ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, PowerWorld, Matlab, PSCAD, PSS/E, ASPEN, Simulink), experience with industrial power systems up to 345 kV, a Professional Engineering license or intent to pursue one, and CAD software skills (Revit, AutoCAD, NX). This is a hands-on role requiring work in all environments (heat, cold, rain), in tight quarters and at heights, with extended hours and weekend availability as needed. You must provide 24/7 on-call support for emergencies, be willing to work on-site in Memphis (not remote or hybrid), travel up to 25% for factory testing and vendor engagement, and hold a valid driver's license. Physical requirements include lifting up to 25 lbs unassisted and remaining focused in hazardous environments while wearing appropriate PPE.
