EON is building a high-throughput point-to-point data transport network in space using free-space laser links in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) to move petabytes of data between any two points on Earth. The company recently closed a $10.75M seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz and General Catalyst, positioning itself as an alternative to subsea and terrestrial fiber infrastructure.
As an Optomechanical Engineer, you will design precision optical assemblies for EON's laser communications terminals, taking them from concept through first light. Your core responsibilities include designing mounts, flexures, and kinematic schemes that maintain sub-micron alignment under thermal swings, vibration, and handling loads. You will contribute to line-of-sight error budgets by analyzing structural dynamics, tolerance stack-up, jitter, and pointing calibration. A significant portion of your work involves structural-thermal-optical (STOP) analysis in partnership with the thermal team, driving tolerance and alignment-budget trades with optical design engineers where mechanical and optical performance are tightly coupled.
You will execute alignment verification and metrology to confirm assemblies meet budgets on the bench and after environmental exposure. You'll support environmental testing and qualification including vibration, shock, and thermal-vacuum cycles that prove assemblies maintain alignment through launch and field conditions.
The role requires a degree in mechanical engineering, optical engineering, physics, or related discipline, plus hands-on experience with optomechanical design (mounts, flexures, kinematic design) and precision optical assembly alignment. Proficiency in 3D CAD (NX, SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalent) is essential. Preferred experience includes space or airborne optomechanical hardware, lasercom or optical communications terminals, structural FEA, athermalization, fiber-coupling optomechanics, and environmental test qualification.
