Anduril Industries, a defense technology company, is seeking an Optical Systems Technical Lead to join its Warfighter Systems division, which develops mixed reality (MR) technologies for military applications. The role focuses on designing and optimizing advanced display test and calibration processes for near-to-eye display subsystems used in AR/VR warfighter equipment.
Key responsibilities include leading optical architecture decisions and trades for novel display systems; owning the optical system across its complete lifecycle from design through integration, alignment, test, and verification/validation of as-built hardware. You will define optical performance requirements, build and defend optical error budgets, allocate tolerances across components and assembly processes, and partner closely with optical process engineering to co-develop manufacturing and metrology processes.
The role requires deep technical expertise in optical systems engineering, with accountability for ensuring designs translate successfully to production. You will evaluate prototype and production performance, analyze errors to determine root causes, and close the loop between predicted and as-built performance to improve iterative designs.
Required qualifications include a BS in Engineering with optics concentration, demonstrated ownership across full systems-engineering lifecycle, deep experience with optical design software (Zemax or CODE V), STOP analysis expertise, knowledge of image quality metrics, and experience designing diffraction-limited imaging systems in dynamic environments. The role requires regular international travel to Taiwan (approximately every 1-2 months) to work hands-on with manufacturing partners and production teams.
Preferred qualifications include MS/PhD, first-principles problem-solving approach, direct experience partnering with optical process/manufacturing engineering for volume production, optical component and system testing experience, radiometry and stray light analysis knowledge, and demonstrated team leadership and mentoring capabilities.
