Salary: CAD 93,000 - 117,000 / annual
Rocket Lab is an end-to-end space company building rockets, spacecraft, and critical subsystems for global connectivity, protection, and deep-space exploration. The Space Systems team has enabled over 1,700 missions including interplanetary exploration, in-space manufacturing, and national security initiatives, partnering with NASA, the Space Development Agency, and the U.S. Space Force.
Based at Rocket Lab's Sinclair Interplanetary facility in Toronto, the Optical Engineer II reports to the optical lead and supports the development and maintenance of star tracker products—precision optical systems critical to spacecraft navigation and orientation.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, analysis, and testing to develop new star tracker products and maintain existing ones
- Develop, integrate, and commission test setups for star tracker production and R&D
- Collect and analyze data to quantify part-level and unit-level performance
- Support quality teams in root cause analysis and non-conformance disposition
- Assist production teams with assembly, integration, and testing of star tracker products
- Support business development in responding to customer inquiries
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in science or engineering
- 2+ years of mechanical engineering or related field experience
- 2+ years designing, developing, or testing optical systems
Desirable qualifications include 5+ years in mechanical engineering or optical systems, Master's degree in physics or aerospace engineering, experience with Zemax OpticStudio, optomechanical design, spacecraft systems, lens manufacturing, stray light analysis, Python/Matlab, GIT/SVN, and embedded C development.
The role involves occasional exposure to production environments with moderate noise, dust, and fumes.
