Salary: USD 86,000 - 143,000 / annual
Neuralink is seeking an Optical Engineer to join the Robot Optics Team, responsible for all optical engineering aspects of surgical robotics and operating room equipment. The role focuses on designing, developing, and maintaining custom optics and imaging systems used in Neuralink's surgical robot and consumables-manufacturing systems, spanning from sub-micron conventional imaging and laser scanning to optical power delivery.
Key responsibilities include designing and simulating optical imaging systems, testing and maintaining robot vision systems, developing custom laser interferometry and manufacturing systems, testing optical consumables, building and testing beam-scanning instruments, and developing image acquisition and processing software. You will research and develop new imaging technologies for robotic surgeries and prepare documentation and standard operating procedures.
The role requires collaboration across mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams, as well as with neuroscientists and biologists. You will own designs from conception through implementation, prototyping, and building optical systems rapidly with the team. The position involves hands-on work with optical subsystems across multiple robot versions, from ideation through production, testing, and maintenance. In-house manufacturing of hardware means significant involvement in bring-up testing, designing hardware acceptance testers, and overseeing manufacturing processes.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor of Science or higher in Physics, Optical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering; 3+ years of optical engineering experience; 2+ years designing and simulating optics in Zemax or equivalent software; and practical experience designing, testing, and reliability-hardening optical systems. Preferred qualifications include experience with in-vivo imaging systems, high-power laser instruments, laser interferometry or optical coherence tomography, optical fiber fabrication and splicing, and software scripting for instrument testing.
