Aalo Atomics is pioneering factory-fabricated microreactors designed to deliver affordable, scalable, and reliable nuclear power. The company is based in Austin, TX and is rapidly growing as it works to deploy the world's first fleet of advanced microreactors, starting with the Aalo-1, a 10 MWe reactor. You will serve as the Nuclear Safety Integration Lead, reporting to the Nuclear Safety Manager. This is a high-visibility coordination role that acts as the critical integration point among the DOE authorization team, Risk and Reliability group, thermal-hydraulics, neutronics, design, and other contributing engineering teams. You will ensure that safety requirements are understood, responsibilities are clear, and the resulting analyses support a consistent and defensible safety case. Key responsibilities include: • Develop and maintain an integrated PDSA (Preliminary Documented Safety Analysis) content, requirements, and responsibility plan that defines scope, ownership, interfaces, and delivery milestones for all contributing technical teams. • Coordinate the preparation, integration, internal review, and technical defense of the PDSA and related DOE safety documentation, working with the DOE authorization lead and responsible technical teams. • Translate applicable DOE safety-basis requirements and standards (10 CFR 830, DOE-STD-3009) into specific analysis, report, and data needs for contributing engineering teams, including clear interfaces and dependencies. • Identify analytical methods, codes, and key assumptions requiring DOE alignment, and coordinate early and ongoing engagement with DOE through the DOE authorization lead to confirm their suitability for intended safety-basis applications. • Coordinate the integration of inputs from Risk and Reliability, including PRA, deterministic safety analysis, dose consequences, thermal-hydraulics, neutronics, fuel performance, hazards analysis, and supporting engineering information into the DOE safety case. • Identify gaps, inconsistent assumptions, missing interfaces, and unresolved technical questions that could affect the PDSA, DOE authorization, design, resources, or schedule, and communicate them to appropriate decision-makers. • Establish a structured process for providing safety and risk feedback to design teams and tracking the resolution of safety-related design questions. • Define how safety inputs are communicated to design teams, document the basis for their disposition, maintain traceability to affected analyses and requirements, and confirm closure with responsible teams. • Facilitate technical integration meetings and working sessions to resolve cross-discipline analytical interfaces, assumptions, and dependencies. • Track and manage the status of PDSA deliverables, technical inputs, and open items across contributing teams, escalating schedule or quality risks as appropriate. • Support the development of responses to DOE requests for additional information, safety evaluation reports, and other regulatory interactions related to the safety basis. • Coordinate with the nuclear safety team to ensure consistency between PDSA content and other safety basis documents, including hazard analyses, TSRs, and USQ evaluations. • Maintain configuration management of integrated PDSA content, ensuring version control and traceability of technical inputs and assumptions across contributing disciplines. • Support preparation for DOE readiness assessments and authorization milestones by ensuring the completeness and defensibility of the integrated safety case. The ideal candidate demonstrates ownership of outcomes, proactively identifies problems and drives solutions, is energized by complex technical challenges, and maintains a sense of urgency while balancing quality and execution. REQUIREMENTS: • Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related technical discipline. • 8+ years of experience in nuclear safety analysis, safety basis development, or technical integration at DOE nuclear facilities. • Demonstrated experience coordinating multi-discipline technical inputs into DOE safety basis documents such as DSAs, PDSAs, or equivalent. • Strong working knowledge of DOE safety-basis requirements, including 10 CFR 830 and DOE-STD-3009. • Experience translating regulatory requirements into specific engineering analysis and documentation needs. • Familiarity with probabilistic risk assessment, deterministic safety analysis, and dose consequence methodologies as applied to nuclear facility safety cases. • Experience coordinating with DOE on analytical methods, codes, and assumptions for safety-basis applications. • Strong technical writing and communication skills, with the ability to present complex, multi-discipline safety arguments clearly and concisely. • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent technical deliverables and drive cross-functional teams toward integrated outcomes. • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to build productive working relationships across engineering, operations, and regulatory teams. • U.S. Citizen or U.S. Person in compliance with 10 CFR Part 810. • Willing to work on-site in Idaho Falls, ID. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline. • Experience with thermal-hydraulic, neutronic, or fuel performance analysis codes used in DOE safety basis applications.
