Aalo Atomics is a clean-energy company pioneering factory-fabricated microreactors (Aalo-1, 10 MWe) designed to deliver affordable, scalable, and reliable nuclear power. The company is rapidly scaling across multiple U.S. sites (Austin, Georgetown, Idaho Falls) and seeks a Nuclear Export Compliance Manager to build and lead its compliance program from the ground up. This is a newly created senior individual-contributor role reporting to the General Counsel. You will own the company's compliance program under U.S. Department of Energy assistance-to-foreign-atomic-energy-activities regulations (10 C.F.R. Part 810) and related U.S. trade controls. You will have real authority—including the ability to suspend disclosures or individual access to Export Controlled Information (ECI) pending review—and organizational backing to use it. Key responsibilities include: • Serve as Aalo's designated, accountable decision-maker for all Part 810 matters company-wide, with authority to approve, pause, or suspend disclosures of ECI and suspend individual access pending review. • Own authorization of ECI releases: review and approve what information may leave the company and to whom, in coordination with Engineering (which performs technical ECI determinations). • Establish and own document-marking standards and release-approval workflows, documenting who reviews, approves, and marks information before external transfer. • Serve as the company's single point of contact for all communications and reporting to DOE/NNSA; build internal reporting processes to capture and route required information (individual name, address, initial ECI access date) and end independent employee self-reporting. • Build and run the export-control training program: onboarding and annual refresher training for all employees, executives, interns, consultants, and contractors; department-specific guidance; documented completion tracking; and recurring document-review office hours. • Design and enforce the visitor and site-security program across Austin, Georgetown, and Idaho Falls facilities—Foreign National screening, escorts, approved routes, photography restrictions, badging, and preventing ECI exposure on screens, whiteboards, and common areas. • Own the international-travel approval process: review and approve any travel involving ECI or devices containing/accessing it, with precautions for screen visibility, cameras, unattended devices, and loss. • Establish and enforce a self-publication/public-release procedure (photos, videos, social media, presentations, podcasts, site tours) in coordination with General Counsel and patent/IP counsel. • Reinstate and oversee OFAC screening and embed it into procurement procedures; define procurement's export-control responsibilities and required subject-matter-expert review before supplier exchanges. • Oversee import/export licensing compliance for physical equipment (e.g., NRC regulations at 10 C.F.R. Part 110, including neutron flux monitor sourced from France). • Maintain a controlled, centralized policy repository and repository of signed Retransfer Assurance Agreements/NDAs and proofs of citizenship to reliably track actual ECI recipients. • Partner with IT and CISO on controls that keep ECI off non-compliant systems and personal devices—approved transfer environments, enforced screen-lock timeouts, device inventory and tracking, and governance of approved vs. personal AI tools. • Conduct periodic internal audits of actual practices and drive a culture of consistent, leadership-backed compliance, eliminating informal overrides and inaccurate guidance. Qualifications: • Demonstrated working knowledge of U.S. nuclear export controls under 10 C.F.R. Part 810, and familiarity with related regimes (NRC 10 C.F.R. Part 110, EAR, and OFAC sanctions screening). • Experience building or operating an export-compliance program—policies, procedures, training, and recordkeeping—ideally in a fast-growing or startup environment where the program must be built from the ground up. • Proven ability to make and defend authorization decisions independently, and the judgment and backbone to pause or suspend a disclosure or access when warranted. • Strong partnership skills to work across Engineering, Procurement, Marketing, IT/Security, HR, and Legal, and to translate technical determinations into clear release decisions. • Experience interfacing with federal regulators (DOE/NNSA preferred) and preparing or supporting regulatory reporting and disclosures. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to train non-specialists and build a culture of compliance. • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree, JD, or relevant technical/nuclear background a plus. • Willingness to travel among Aalo's Austin, Georgetown, and Idaho Falls facilities. • Must be based in the United States and willing to work on-site in Austin, TX. • Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Person in compliance with 10 CFR Part 810; may not hold non-compliant foreign citizenships.
