xAI is seeking a Network Engineer to join the High Power Engineering team supporting AI training campus infrastructure. You will own the operational technology (OT) network for battery energy storage systems (BESS), ensuring deterministic, redundant, and secure communications across power packs, inverters, medium-voltage collection systems, and plant controllers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and maintain site network architecture: topology, redundancy, switch selection, VLAN/subnet design, and IP addressing across the storage fleet
- Own the physical fiber and copper plant infrastructure: single-mode and multimode fiber runs, splice planning, patch panel layout, labeling, OTDR testing, and pathway coordination
- Integrate industrial protocols (Modbus TCP, DNP3, IEC 61850 with GOOSE) across pack controllers, power conversion systems, plant controller, and energy management systems
- Implement precision time distribution using PTP (IEEE 1588) and IRIG-B for sequence-of-events and disturbance analysis
- Establish OT cybersecurity: network segmentation per IEC 62443, firewall rules, remote access controls, patch/firmware management, and NERC CIP compliance
- Specify and commission industrial switches, media converters, gateways, protocol converters, terminal servers, and time sources
- Support commissioning with network validation, latency/packet-loss testing, failover testing, and pack-level troubleshooting
Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or related field (or 6+ years relevant experience); 3+ years industrial, utility, or OT network engineering experience.
Preferred: hands-on industrial switch/router configuration; experience with Modbus TCP, DNP3, or IEC 61850; fiber optic termination and testing; BESS/solar/substation automation background; IEC 61850 station/process bus design; IEC 62443 or NERC CIP program experience; Cisco, Hirschfeld, Moxa, RuggedCom platform expertise.
Role is fully on-site in Memphis, TN with up to 25% travel for factory testing, vendor engagement, and supporting other sites. Requires 24/7 on-call support, ability to work extended hours/weekends, hands-on work in all environments (heat, cold, rain, heights), PPE compliance, lifting up to 25 lbs, and valid driver's license.
