Orca Bio is a commercial-stage biotechnology company developing next-generation cell therapies to improve outcomes for patients with blood cancer, addressing limitations of traditional allogeneic stem cell transplants.
The National Senior Director of Field Medical Affairs will serve as the strategic and operational leader of the Medical Science Liaison (MSL) organization. Reporting to the Vice President of Medical Affairs, you will establish, grow, and lead the national field-based MSL team while ensuring alignment of field medical activities with broader organizational goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Establish and lead the national MSL team, defining operational frameworks, best practices, and standard operating procedures
- Recruit, train, mentor, and manage MSL staff to ensure scientific and operational excellence
- Translate medical strategy into clear, actionable field medical initiatives with measurable outcomes
- Identify and strategically engage key thought leaders and external experts aligned with medical strategy
- Oversee field-based support of clinical trials, including site education, patient recruitment, and investigator engagement
- Represent the organization at scientific conferences and participate in advisory boards
- Build MSL team infrastructure for compliant scientific insight collection, training, and CRM operations
- Oversee MSL scientific engagements with KOLs/HCPs, ensuring compliance and guiding collection of actionable insights
- Drive alignment and collaboration across products, disease states, and indications
- Support Medical Affairs on business planning, special projects, and strategic initiatives including congress planning
- Ensure highest ethical standards and compliance with FDA, PhRMA, OIG guidelines and company policies
- Maintain scientific expertise through continuous education and attendance at key meetings
- Collaborate with internal teams on publications, training, and development of medical resources
Travel: Approximately 40-50% domestic travel required.
Requirements:
- Advanced scientific degree required: doctorate-level clinical/medical degree (MD, PharmD, or PhD)
- 8+ years of experience in Medical Affairs, including experience as an MSL and at least 3 years managing field-based MSL teams
- Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, motivation, initiative, mentoring, strategic thinking, problem-solving, planning, and organizational abilities
- Strong understanding of US pharma regulations, particularly as applied to MSL activities; ability to develop, coach, and oversee a highly compliant MSL function
- Experience in team management, developing and tracking MSL performance metrics
- Experience managing departmental projects and resources
- Experience managing and developing relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs) and healthcare professionals (HCPs)
Preferred:
- Cell and/or gene therapy experience
- Experience in small biotech or start-up environments
- Demonstrated success in field medical launch planning and execution
