Helsing is a defense AI company building software and AI systems that enhance existing defense hardware capabilities by up to 10x. The sensing stack is foundational to this mission—without precise, synchronized, calibrated sensor data, the AI has nothing to work with.
As a Multimodal Sensing and Fusion Engineer, you will own the end-to-end sensing architecture. You will architect the multimodal perception front-end that integrates electro-optical and long-wave infrared cameras, radar, LiDAR, and inertial sensing into a single, coherent input to Helsing's AI systems. This is not a prototyping role; the systems you design go into operational environments where the quality of sensor data directly affects the decisions the AI supports in the field.
Key responsibilities include:
• Define the multimodal sensing architecture by selecting and integrating EO and LWIR cameras, radar, LiDAR, and IMUs. Align requirements with the AI team to optimize algorithm performance while balancing trade-offs across size, weight, power, cost, and robustness.
• Own sensor synchronization by designing and implementing time synchronization across heterogeneous sensors using PTP/gPTP, PPS, and hardware triggers (Hsync, Vsync) to ensure all modalities share a common, precise time base.
• Translate mission requirements into concrete specifications for sensor selection, placement, synchronization, and calibration.
• Define safety concepts that ensure the system degrades gracefully and fails safe in the field.
• Work at the intersection of hardware engineers, electrical engineers, and AI/computer-vision researchers.
You will be based in Munich, Berlin, or London, joining an ambitious team of engineers, AI specialists, and program managers committed to solving complex, high-impact problems.
