OpenFX is building infrastructure to enable cross-border payments and FX transactions at scale, operating across multiple geographic regions and cloud environments. The company is backed by top-tier investors including Accel, Lightspeed, and NFX, with a team drawn from JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, FalconX, PayPal, Affirm, and other leading fintech and infrastructure companies. As Multi-Geo / Multi-Cloud Application Architect, you own the design and integrity of a payments and FX platform that must operate reliably across multiple geographic regions and cloud environments without compromising availability, data sovereignty, latency, or regulatory compliance. This is a hands-on role where architectural decisions directly impact whether settlements clear during cloud provider degradations, whether clients in regulated jurisdictions can transact with data residency guarantees, and whether OpenFX can migrate between cloud providers without platform rewrites. Key responsibilities include: **Multi-Region Architecture**: Define and maintain reference architectures for multi-region deployment, including traffic routing, data replication, failover behavior, and regional isolation boundaries. Own architectural decisions governing service deployment, scaling, and failover across regions. Design for regional independence—the ability to isolate a region for regulatory or operational reasons without degrading global capability. Establish standards ensuring new services are designed for multi-region operation from inception. **Multi-Cloud Strategy**: Maintain architectures that avoid hard coupling to any single cloud provider for critical functions. Evaluate trade-offs between managed cloud services and cloud-agnostic alternatives, with explicit reasoning about portability, cost, and operational overhead. Lead design of abstraction layers and platform primitives enabling services to run across cloud environments without service-level re-engineering. Define and test cloud provider failover runbooks with defined RTO and RPO targets. **Data Sovereignty & Regulatory Architecture**: Design data routing, storage, and processing architectures enforcing jurisdictional data residency requirements. Translate regulatory obligations into concrete architectural constraints at infrastructure and application layers. Define data classification frameworks specifying what replicates globally, what stays regionally isolated, and what requires explicit consent to move. Ensure observability infrastructure produces evidence for regulatory compliance demonstrations. **Platform Reliability & Resilience**: Define availability and resilience targets; ensure architecture meets them under realistic failure scenarios. Lead chaos engineering and failure mode analysis exercises validating failover and multi-cloud fallback behavior. Own observability architecture across multi-region, multi-cloud deployments including unified logging, distributed tracing, and coherent alerting. Establish SLO/SLA frameworks reflecting OpenFX's availability and latency commitments. **Architecture Governance**: Conduct architecture reviews for significant features, integrations, and infrastructure changes across all teams. Maintain and evolve the ADR (Architecture Decision Record) library ensuring decisions are current and discoverable. Work with pod Tech Leads identifying and addressing architectural drift in production systems. You operate at the intersection of distributed systems engineering, cloud infrastructure, and financial regulatory compliance, working closely with the Principal Architect, Platform team, pod-level Tech Leads, and Security and Compliance functions.
