The Next.js team builds the open-source framework powering millions of applications. This role is a hands-on player/coach position for an experienced engineer who wants to remain close to the code while leading a small team. You will be an engineer first and a manager second, spending the majority of your time on technical leadership and engineering execution rather than traditional people management.
Key responsibilities include:
- Write production code, review pull requests, debug complex issues, and contribute directly to the Next.js framework
- Lead major technical initiatives from exploration through architecture, implementation, rollout, and production follow-through
- Make sound architectural decisions across rendering, caching, routing, build systems, runtime behavior, and developer tooling
- Investigate performance regressions, production failures, and developer pain points to drive framework improvements
- Establish strong patterns for code quality, testing, performance, reliability, observability, and incremental delivery
- Coach engineers through pairing, design reviews, code reviews, and shared ownership of challenging problems
- Set clear expectations, provide candid feedback, and support career development for team members
- Create lightweight planning and decision-making practices that clarify ownership and reduce unnecessary coordination
- Partner across Vercel with Product, Design, Infrastructure, and other engineering teams
- Work in public, engage with open-source contributors, and balance community needs with product priorities
- Participate in recruiting and help new engineers become productive in the complex codebase
