Sail Research is hiring a Member of Technical Staff to join the Sailboxes team, a rapidly growing product line focused on cost-efficient CPU sandboxes for long-horizon AI agents. You'll be one of the first engineers on this product and will work across the full agent runtime stack, from low-level performance optimization on Sail's custom networking and FirecrackerVM fork to large-scale distributed systems that maximize fleet efficiency and minimize latency. Key responsibilities include: - Optimizing Sail's custom FirecrackerVM fork to extract maximum performance from the platform - Modeling usage patterns and implementing scheduling algorithms for intelligent autoscaling while maintaining low latency - Designing and implementing highly-available distributed systems handling millions of operations per second - Building comprehensive monitoring and observability tooling that delights both human operators and AI agents - Owning future product directions for Sailboxes, including Windows/Mac sandboxes and high-efficiency storage solutions You should have strong distributed systems fundamentals (concurrency, networking, databases, performance engineering) and ideally production experience maintaining large-scale systems. Cloud infrastructure experience (GCP, AWS, Azure), container orchestration, and multi-cloud networking knowledge are valuable. A product-focused mindset and commitment to building robust, scalable, ergonomic solutions are essential. FirecrackerVM experience is a bonus. Sail operates from a downtown San Francisco office with a strong commitment to team quality of life: all meals provided, Studio Displays at every desk, and a collaborative environment.
