Perplexity AI is hiring a Member of Technical Staff for the Model Behavior team to shape how its AI products respond and interact with users. The role focuses on context and prompt engineering strategies that deliver high-quality experiences across multiple domains and models.
You will own several key areas: designing, testing, and optimizing prompts, skills, tools, and memory systems that shape Perplexity responses across products and use cases. You'll build self-improvement loops to steer prompt evolution, enhance tool and skill utilization, and improve the model's ability to leverage memory. You'll also help experiment with and release new models, working closely with the broader engineering organization.
A significant part of the role involves research and analysis—identifying inconsistencies and failure modes in model outputs through well-designed research projects for both internal and production systems. You'll share knowledge across teams, helping engineers build intuition for prompt design and context engineering best practices. Staying current with the latest prompting, context engineering, and alignment techniques from industry and academia is essential; you'll bring the best ideas back to the team.
The ideal candidate has 2 to 10+ years of software engineering or research experience, with strong fundamentals in software engineering and a technical understanding of LLM-driven and agentic systems. You should have hands-on experience shaping LLM behavior through prompts, tool and skill design, or memory systems. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are critical, especially for explaining complex concepts to diverse stakeholders.
Nice-to-have qualifications include recent experience working on modern LLM-driven products, cross-team or external partnership experience, and experience designing evaluations or benchmarks for AI systems.
