Salary: USD 225,000 - 550,000 / annual

Magic is building safe AGI by automating research and code generation. As the first dedicated Defensive Security Engineer, you will design and implement the software, automation, and infrastructure protecting Magic's models, systems, and engineering organization from traditional and frontier AI cyber threats. You will work at the intersection of software engineering, infrastructure, and security, collaborating closely with researchers, infrastructure engineers, platform teams, and the alignment team. Your focus is reducing risk while maintaining productivity—making the secure path the easy path. Key responsibilities include: - Design, build, and maintain security tooling and automation for engineering teams - Secure developer infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, build systems, and production services - Support sandboxing and isolation for untrusted code, agent, and model execution - Build guardrails against emerging AI attack vectors (prompt injection, tool abuse, exploit chaining, autonomous model behavior) - Protect model weights, research artifacts, datasets, and production infrastructure from unauthorized access and exfiltration - Respond to security incidents and live threats with 24/7 on-call support Required qualifications: - Strong software engineering skills in Rust, Go, Python, C++, Kotlin, TypeScript, or similar - Deep understanding of modern MITRE ATT&CK techniques - Active engagement with LLMs in securing and attacking software systems - Experience securing distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, or large-scale production environments - Ability to develop high-complexity cloud Linux-based exploits - Deep knowledge of UNIX/operating systems, networking, authentication, authorization, and modern security architecture - Experience building automation and tooling for fast-paced organizations - Track record of exceptional integrity, accountability, and trustworthiness in high-autonomy environments Compensation: $225K–$550K annually plus significant equity.
