Mercor is an AI data company on a mission to organize human intelligence to power the AI economy. The company operates a platform where millions of domain experts are paid to train frontier AI models, and is expanding into enterprise with AI agent infrastructure for Fortune 500 companies. Mercor is a profitable Series C company valued at $10 billion with offices in San Francisco, NYC, and London. As a Member of Technical Staff for talent experience, you will own the shared backend architecture underpinning every user journey across Mercor's talent network. This is a hands-on technical leadership role focused on defining technical direction rather than people management. You will architect core services, data models, APIs, and infrastructure patterns that scale to tens of thousands of experts and support the world's leading AI labs. Key responsibilities include: owning the architecture of shared backend systems; defining long-term technical strategy for backend architecture across the organization; designing systems for scale, reliability, and evolvability; leading high-stakes technical decisions and design reviews; identifying and paying down architectural debt; establishing backend engineering standards and best practices; staying hands-on by prototyping critical systems and shipping production code; mentoring senior engineers; and partnering with engineering and product leadership on platform investments and technical hiring. You will need 8+ years of professional backend engineering experience, including 3+ years at Senior level or above. Required expertise includes distributed systems, service architecture, data modeling, and API design at scale. You should have a track record of owning architecture across multiple teams or an entire organization, with decisions that have aged well. Experience leading large, complex technical migrations in production is essential. You should be fluent in modern AI development tools (Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar) and have experience mentoring senior engineers. Strong communication skills and ability to make complex tradeoffs legible to both engineers and leadership are critical. Mercor offers generous equity vested over 4 years, a $20K relocation bonus if moving to the Bay Area, a $10K housing bonus if living within 0.5 miles of the office, a $1.5K monthly meals stipend, free Equinox membership, and health insurance. The company operates in-person five days a week.
