Rocket Lab is seeking a Mechanical Test and Launch Operations Engineer I to join the Ground Systems team at Wallops Island, supporting operations of the Electron and Neutron launch vehicles. In this role, you will operate ground systems as a launch console operator during integrated systems testing, rehearsals, and actual launches. You'll be responsible for executing complex test sequences, monitoring real-time ground systems data, making critical go/no-go decisions, and commanding ground support equipment during countdown and flight operations.
Key responsibilities include operating Electron and Neutron ground systems from the control room; supporting development, integration, and testing of launch pad infrastructure and ground support equipment (GSE); leading and executing testing campaigns including GSE commissioning and ground system readiness checks; managing configuration and verification of launch pad hardware and facility systems; developing operational procedures, test plans, and emergency response protocols; designing and improving human-machine interfaces (HMIs) for ground control systems; and troubleshooting real-time issues during test and launch operations.
You'll work within the Ground Systems discipline, which is responsible for launch pad infrastructure, GSE, fluid systems, and all facility operations that enable launch. This is a hands-on role that combines engineering rigor with operational excellence in a fast-paced aerospace environment.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Mechatronic preferred) plus 1+ years of experience in engineering design, test, and/or operations. Alternatively, 2+ years of relevant experience may substitute for a degree.
Desirable experience includes background in launch complex infrastructure, pad systems, or GSE design/operations; hands-on experience with fluid systems, cryogenic systems, pressurized systems, and hazardous materials handling; practical experience conducting real-time hazardous operations with propellants, high-pressure gases, or hydraulic systems; and experience developing operational procedures, test plans, CONOPS documentation, or emergency response procedures.
